Southern California Healthcare Data Center Cuts Energy Consumption 26%, Saves Over $1 Million a Year

Smart HVAC controls, coil coatings, and power optimization cut the facility's PUE from 1.73 to 1.54 at zero capital cost

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, September 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A regional healthcare provider in Southern California has cut its data center's annual energy consumption by 26%, saving more than $1 million a year, ONSITE Utility Services announced, following an efficiency upgrade delivered with minimal investment and funded entirely through Energy-as-a-Service.
Before engaging ONSITE, the provider was spending over $4.1 million annually to operate the data center, which carried a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of about 1.73. ONSITE reviewed 12 months of utility bills and the facility's mechanical equipment, then conducted an onsite audit to design a plan targeting the facility's existing HVAC equipment and incoming power quality.

The plan outfitted the chillers and rooftop units serving the data space with smart controls on both compressors and supply fans, converting them from fixed-speed to variable-speed operation without sacrificing output, and applied a nano-polymer coating to the evaporator and condensing coils to close microscopic openings that allow treated air to escape while protecting the components from corrosion. ONSITE also installed power optimization equipment at all four switchgear locations feeding the facility, balancing voltage across all three phases and reducing KVAR.
A year later, annual electricity consumption fell from 23,678,034 kWh to 17,427,412 kWh, and the facility's PUE improved from 1.73 to 1.54. The provider also reported fewer service calls on its HVAC equipment.
